Bio

SeongJoon Cho is a Seoul-based photographer. His work spans documentary, editorial, commercial and aerial photography. He began exhibiting while studying photography at Chung-Ang University and presented his first solo exhibition at the Australian Embassy in Seoul. Since then he has held seven solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions. His work has been recognized by international competitions including the National Geographic and APEC International Photo Contests. He has also served as a juror for organizations such as Garuda Indonesia, DJI, the Korea Meteorological Administration and Suhyup.

Cho worked as a photojournalist for Bloomberg News. He documented major historical and political events around the world including the first and second North Korea–United States summits, the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests, five APEC summits and five Singapore Airshows. He is also a member of the White House press corps and has covered U.S. Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden and Vice Presidents Mike Pence and Kamala Harris during their visits to Korea.

His commercial work includes advertising and promotional photography for global brands such as Samsung Electronics, Nike and Royal Dutch Shell. He has also served as a personal photographer for internationally recognized figures including Warren Buffett and Bill Gates.

Cho is a pioneer of drone photography in Korea. He held the country's first drone photography exhibition and authored Drone: The World from Above. In 2011 he was named "Photographer of the Year" by Canadian energy consulting firm Scotia Waterous and published the photobook Memories of the Heart in Canada — a lyrical photographic portrait of Korea's landscapes. He is also an alumnus of the Eddie Adams Workshop and received a top award there in 2006. Cho continues to explore photography as an enduring record of history. His recent photobook ‘Chronicle of The Times’ documents the defining moments of contemporary Korea.

Cho currently serves as an assistant professor in the School of Photography and Moving Image at Kyungil University. He teaches photojournalism and drone photography and brings his extensive field experience to the next generation of photographers.

사진가 조성준에게 카메라는 시대의 가장 가까운 증인이 되는 도구다. 중앙대학교 사진학과 재학 중 주한 호주대사관에서 첫 개인전을 연 후 지금까지 일곱 번의 개인전과 다수의 단체전을 가졌다. 내셔널지오그래픽 국제사진 공모전과 APEC 국제사진 공모전 등에서 수상하며 사진가로서의 시야를 넓혀왔다.

그 시야는 곧 세계사의 한복판으로 이어졌다. 블룸버그 통신 서울 주재 외신 사진기자로 일하며 제1·2차 북미정상회담과 홍콩 민주화 운동을 현장에서 취재했고, 다섯 차례의 APEC 정상회의와 싱가포르 에어쇼를 카메라에 담았다. 몽골 고비사막의 구리 광산부터 필리핀 민다나오섬의 참치 어시장까지 아시아 곳곳의 현장을 그만의 독특한 시각으로 기록했다. 또한 백악관 기자단의 일원으로 오바마·트럼프·바이든 전현직 미국 대통령과 펜스·해리스 부통령 방한 시 지근거리에서 밀착 취재해 왔다.

뉴스의 현장을 떠나서도 그의 카메라는 쉬지 않는다. 삼성전자, 나이키, 로얄더치셸 등 세계적 기업의 광고·홍보 사진을 촬영했다. 워렌 버핏(버크셔 해서웨이 회장)과 빌 게이츠(게이츠파운데이션 이사장)를 비롯한 다수의 VIP 전속 사진가로도 활동하며 포토저널리스트의 시선을 상업·인물 사진의 영역까지 넓혀왔다.

하늘 위의 시각에도 먼저 눈을 뜬 사진가다. 국내 최초로 드론 사진전을 열었고, 사진집 《드론 - 공중에서 본 세상, 눈빛》을 펴내며 드론 사진의 새로운 가능성을 제시했다. 이러한 전문성과 안목을 바탕으로 가루다인도네시아항공 국제사진 공모전, DJI 드론 사진·영상 공모전, 기상청 기상·기후 사진 공모전, 수협 우리 바다 사진 공모전 등 다수의 공모전에서 심사위원을 역임했다.

2011년에는 캐나다 에너지 컨설팅 기업 스코시아 워터러스가 후원하는 '올해의 사진가'로 선정되어 한국의 서정적 풍광을 담은 사진집 《마음의 여정(Memories of the Heart)》을 캐나다 현지에서 발간했다. 이후 최근작 《시대의 기록, 도서출판 윤진》에 이르기까지 그의 사진집들은 한결같이 사진이 지닌 역사적 기록물로서의 가치를 조명해 왔다.

다수의 기관에서 사진 및 드론 촬영 특강을 진행해 왔으며, 현재 경일대학교 사진영상학부 교수로 재직하며 '포토저널리즘', '드론촬영실기' 등을 가르치고 있다. 세계 현장에서 쌓아온 경험을 강의실로 옮겨와 다음 시대를 기록할 사진가들과 그 시선을 나누고 있다.
